|Hong Kong System of Education
The Hong Kong education system, overseen by the Hong Kong Education Bureau, is divided into three types of schools: government schools, subsidized schools and private international schools. Government schools are fully funded by the Hong Kong government and teach in Cantonese and English.
As a former colony of Britain, the Hong Kong education system has been heavily influenced by the British model although these days the medium of education is Chinese. . Education is free in primary, junior and senior secondary school the first 9 years are compulsory. Students may attend up to three years of kindergarten ages three to six. After kindergarten, students enter six years of primary school ages six to twelve years old. And 3-year junior secondary education (12-15 years old), 3-year senior secondary education (15-18 years old), and then 4-year tertiary education in a university.

Under the Kindergarten ‘Curriculum Aim’: Learning Objectives
To build an interest in English.
To develop the attitude and confidence in interacting with people and their environment using simple English.
To gradually develop basic concepts of English.
Proper guidance and encouragement from teachers will help children develop awareness and concepts of English at an early stage, which lay the foundation for their future English language development.
The majority of time at kindergarten is devoted to work activities (105 minutes), leaving 57 minutes for play activities (teacher will lead the game activities)

In Primary children are to study Social Studies, Education, Science, Math, English, Chinese, Art, and Music. There may be Reading Corner, Mathematics Corner, Nature Corner, Art and Crafts Corner, Music Corner, Home Corner etc. There are 524 secondary schools in Hong Kong. 497 are local schools and 27 are private or international schools. Secondary schools can be divided into CMI (Chinese as the medium of instruction) and EMI (English as the medium of instruction). There are approximately 112 EMI schools.
Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education curriculum consists of four core subjects (Chinese language, English, mathematics and liberal studies). With this curriculum it helps the students to acquire knowledge relevant to further studies and be job ready.
